Annual Special Events
Church Cleaning
Members join together annually on a Saturday morning in the spring to clean the entire facility and oil the woodwork.
Easter Lilly Delivery
Help share the joy of Christ’s resurrection with homebound members.
Spring Smorgasboard
Hosted in April for the congregation and community, with proceeds going to mission work.
Women’s League Bargain and Bake Sale
Held each summer, with part of the proceeds donated to mission work.
Oktoberfest
Meal and fellowship event at the church in October in conjunction with the Reformation; many volunteers needed.
Christmas Luncheon & Bazaar
Held in December for the congregation and community with proceeds going to mission work.
Christmas Caroling and Chili Supper
An afternoon of caroling to our homebound members, followed by a chili supper at the church; held on a Saturday in December.
Poinsettia Delivery
Brighten someone’s day by delivering a poinsettia in December.
Christian Education
Sunday School Teachers
Teach a Sunday School class from 9:45-10:45 a.m.
Rhythm of Faith Music Camp
Assist with snacks, games, and other activities at the annual summer music camp, which teaches campers about music technique, hymnody, theology, architecture, and more.
Vacation Bible School (VBS)
Assist with set-up, registration, crafts, games, small group leadership, music, teaching, and food during Vacation Bible School, held for one week each summer.
Youth Group
Assist with youth group activities (e.g., accompany youth to Higher Things)
St. John’s Classical Lutheran School
Volunteer to assist students with reading and homework; contact the school for more information.
Ongoing Projects
Lutheran Braille Workers
This group helps distribute large-print Spanish Version Bibles all over the world; also prints and binds English Version large-print Bibles and devotionals. Meets on demand (about once every 5-6 weeks).
Doorstep
St. John’s is a member congregation of Doorstep, a community organization that offers a helping hand (e.g., food, clothing, personal care and household items, rent and utility assistance) to those in need. Learn more about Doorstep by visiting their website; there are many ways to help!
Women’s League Mission Blanket Group
Makes quilt blankets for distribution locally and worldwide; usually meets quarterly during the week or Sunday afternoons. Anyone interested in helping is welcome (including students who need community service hours).
World and Domestic Missions
Quilts, health kits, and school kits are made/donations collected and assembled locally to be distributed throughout the world by Orphan Grain Train. Quilt blankets are also given to local organizations such as the Topeka Rescue Mission, Doorstep, and Sacred Ground Ministries of Haskell University in Lawrence. All are welcome to help (including students who need community service hours).
Office Volunteers
Assist the office staff with printing/assembly of newsletter and other major mailings; record attendance and contribution information on computer; assist the Financial Secretary in tallying contributions.
Meals for Families with Newborns
Prepared and delivered by volunteers.
