Listen to this account today in the Gospel reading and rejoice. Rejoice in Jesus who has accomplished your salvation. Rejoice in his forgiveness that he graciously gives to you. Rejoice in the forgiveness you give to others. Rejoice in the new life you have been given and now live. Rejoice in the healing that you have with this forgiveness and look to the final day when you will rise from your graves. Today is a day to rejoice in your crucified Lord. It’s a glorious day because your sin is forgiven and you have eternal life. See Jesus. See him as the Victor who is here even now as his word is read and preached, and his Supper is given out. The spoils of glorious battle are yours as he is truly here giving you himself, his own body and blood, given and shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins. Dear people of God listen to the miracle your Lord did out of his great compassion. The comfort in all of this is Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The same God who created Adam and Even putting them in the Garden of Eden is the same God who fed the 4,000 in the Gospel reading and is the same God who has redeemed you. God will not forsake you in this world or into the life to come.

Dear people of God, rejoice in what God has done in your baptism. Use your baptism and find consolation in Christ who has redeemed you. Don’t forget who you are as one who is no longer as slave to sin but one who is forgiven and has been set free. Let your baptism define your whole life even who you are in this world. You bear the name of the Triune God, and this is the confession you have as you go from this place and wherever you may be each day in this world.

Take this all to heart today. Repent for you have sinned against God. Cling to his forgiveness as your Lord is merciful and compassionate to you his dear child. Jesus has suffered all so that you are exalted before God’s throne. Show this same measure to those around you as you forgive one another and are not overcome by evil but overcome evil with good. You are righteous in God’s sight on account of Jesus. God is merciful to you.

As you go through this life and you face times of trial, suffering, or even persecution as St. Peter mentions here in the reading, the day is coming and will come soon when the, “God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” That’s what your future is and you, in humility trust those words of God for you. You will raise from your grave even as Jesus is risen from the dead.

Even as you feast here the Lord promises you that you have a place at the eternal wedding feast which knows no end. You have a foretaste of eternity here on earth. The joy that is salvation in Christ never ends for you but only continues as you are taken to be the Lord and he comes again in glory. This is what you need but even more, so this is what is given to you and you have it all. You need it and Jesus Christ has won it and gives it to you.

Thanks be to God for such mercy shown to you in Christ. Your Lord has done it, and this is his desire for you that you have what he gives. He has prepared a place for you now and forever.

Ascension Day is a day of comfort. What wonderful words of Jesus to hear this morning as you see who you are in Christ. Even though he tells the disciples they will be scattered and leave him alone, Jesus will not be alone for he is with the Father. And for you this means that you stand before the throne of God as one who is in Christ, hidden in him, and clothed with him. In this world, then you have peace because Jesus is the one who overcame the world. Prayer realizes this and lives in it because you know you have deliverance from the tribulations of world and look forward to the life to come. When you pray to God you are praying as his children. You are praying as those who bear the name of the Holy Trinity and made clean by the blood of Christ.

Rejoice dear saints of God on this Jubilate Sunday. With high delight let us unite in songs of great jubilation for Christ has burst forth from death and you have this victory dear saints of God. It is but a little while you have sorrow but rejoice amid the sorrow and see your Lord and his care for you. Find solace in his life-giving word and sacraments. You are at peace with God through the blood of Christ. Pray to him who hears and answers your prayers and sends the Holy Spirit, the comforter. Your Father hears and answers your prayers. Know that a little while is just that, a little while because you are children of God now and will always be his children.

But we, dear ones, must bear in mind that Christ our Lord is no worldly King. His wisdom and His power are not of this world. Jesus enters Jerusalem with firm resolve and unwavering trust in the Father, knowing with full confidence and conviction that the things He’ll soon endure, which evil people will mean for evil purposes, God will nevertheless use for good, the greatest good of all.

Jesus is the eternal God in the flesh. Abraham saw the day of the Lord and rejoiced. You see that day and rejoice as well. God has redeemed you. He calls you to follow him up the mountain and promises that you will be with him and where he dwells. God provides for you even as he has already provided for you the sacrifice of the Lamb of God for your sin. Jesus has done it, and you see him as he is, and you will see him face to face on that great day when he brings you to himself.

As you go through this life, just as you face temptation, you face the devil as one who has the victory already in Christ. Rejoice this first Sunday in Lent. The Most High is your refuge. He is your dwelling place, “no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.” What joy to behold the Lord Jesus who has done this for you. What a forgiveness to have as the Lord covers you with his blood in holy baptism and feeds you with the eternal bread and medicine of immortality in his holy supper. What a victory to have over sin, the devil, and even death because Christ is for you. God does not lead you into temptation and delivers you from evil.

You are baptized and God’s name is place upon you as he has claimed you as his own. Now even though you are a man of dust you are an heir of eternal life. Even if your body does return to the dust, that is goes to death, and your body decays your Lord is the Lord who doesn’t despise what he has made but shows you mercy and forgives your sin. You see in your future the Lord raising your body up no longer as men of dust but men of immortality and incorruption even as Jesus is raised and the first fruits of them that sleep.

Together with the blind man, we are those who’ve known the supreme honor of being served by Christ, even here—especially here in the Divine Service—Him serving us by washing our sins away in holy Baptism, Him absolving us and nourishing our souls through the preaching of His Word and by preparing a table before us, where He gives us His own body and blood for us to eat and drink unto salvation.

Dear saints of God take comfort in the Sower of the seed, Jesus, and look to him alone today. Cling to him because he is the one who didn’t fall to the temptations of the devil. He is the one who is the very Word of God made flesh who was never complacent but set his face like flint toward Jerusalem and was faithful during times of trial, and great suffering. He is the one who has done it, it is finished, and it’s all for you.

The truth is, even if we’ve borne many burdens while serving our Master, it has cost us nothing for Him to be so good and so generous with His grace. But it has cost Him everything. Jesus has labored long to fulfill the whole law for us, so that He could make His merit our own and credit us with His righteousness through faith. He has borne the burden of the cross for us, to atone for all our sins. Surely, we would all be lost in sin and shame had Christ not found us and called us by the Gospel into His holy Church.

Behold Jesus and Jesus only. Fight the good fight of faith knowing that your Lord has already won the day. Go down from the mountain as those who look to the Lord lifted up in the glory of the cross. Rise and have no fear for the Lord is yours and you are his even as he will stand over your grave one day and say to you “rise.” What a day that will be dear saints of God and it truly will be good to be there. On that day, the sight of the transfiguration of the Lord in all his glory will be never ending. There won’t be a need to build tents because the Lord has already prepared a dwelling for you. It’s good to be here today and it will be good to be there forever.

And that is why, above all else, like St. Simeon, we must run and lay hold of Jesus Christ in faith. He is the One in Whom the Scriptures are fulfilled, in Whom all God’s promises find their Yes and Amen. He’s the One Who journeyed from heaven’s throne to the cross to atone for all our sins. He went and shed His holy blood for us and conquered death by His death.

Your Lord, Jesus, is made known, and he is the God of mercy toward you a sinner. You are not worthy that he should come under your roof, but he has come and is here because he has mercy on you. So, hear his word, take, and eat his body and blood. Cling to Christ who has done all things well. Marvel at him who is your Lord, Jesus Christ who looks at you now and says, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed” and know the day is coming when you will stand before him face to face in a glory beyond compare. On that day, the eternal day when you are raised from your grave you will marvel at you Lord and all that is yours forever.

And all of this points forward to the time when the Son of God would leave His Father’s throne to become one flesh with His bride, the Church—when He would take up His own duties as our divine Bridegroom, bearing our sin and shame, and pour out His own life in His blood to be the new wine for our nuptial banquet with Him, to restore us and make all things new.
